Best Free File Hosting Sites

Here, I will post the best free file hosts that I have found on the internet. I’m cheap, so I wouldn’t list something here if it weren’t good. Sites are listed with my favorites towards the top.

www.mydatabus.com
This is my favorite file hosting site for many reasons. First, they allow you to hotlink to files hosted. There is no limit on bandwidth, and the file size limit is 500 mb. That’s like getting a lot of free bandwidth for your large files! In a free account, you get 5 GB of storage. They also have a pretty nice interface that you can use to organize your files into folders. You can choose whether you want any specific file to be public or private. There is also a feature to quickly upload a file already somewhere else on the internet by just copying and pasting the url.

Box.net, Inc.
I like this site, because they do not have any ads, whatsoever. A free account comes with just 1 GB of storage with a 10 mb file size limit, but they’re the ideal site for personal backups. I would recommend this site more for personal backups than file hosting, but it’s good for hosting smaller files too. There is a nifty drag and drop feature that you could use to upload folders or multiple files easily. You can choose whether to make files public or private.

www.snapdrive.net
On this site, you get 2 GB of free storage, a 100 mb file limit, and unlimited bandwidth with the option of hotlinking. This is similar to mydatabus, but you get less space in an account, and the file size limit is smaller. There is also no feature to upload from another url

www.gigasize.com
The greatest feature in this service is the large file size limit. You can upload files up to 1.5 GB in size for free, and they are only deleted after 90 days of inactivity. You also earn “gigapoints” everytime somebody downloads your files so that you can upgrade to a premium account that allows 2.5 GB files (if you really have the upload speed to upload that much). Unfortunately, there is no hotlinking (which they probably can’t afford with the giant file sizes), and there are quite a few ads on download pages.

www.openupload.com
The strength in this service lies in its url upload feature. You can upload files by simply pasting the url location of the file that you want uploaded making it ideal for mirroring files you have on your site. The file size limit is 250 mb which is enough for most purposes, but there is an annoying 20 second timer that runs before a file is downloaded every time.

Goonmonster, some of my sites, especially mydatabus, are way better than the ones you suggested. Don’t think I’ve never heard of yours. These are simply better.
In mediamax, you can’t hotlink to most files if you have a free account. There’s also a ridiculously low 1 GB/month bandwidth and 25 mb/file size. Even box.net is better, because box doesn’t have ads.

Xdrive is alright for backup, but it still doesn’t allow hotlinking, which is the best part of some of the ones I mentioned.

Don’t let the amount of storage space that any free hosting site gives you fool you. You can always create as many accounts as you want if you need more for the ones that give you less space. The sites you mentioned are simply not as convenient if you want to share files from your website.
