Off, Then Back on Everyman
To make a long story short, I’m on round two of the Everyman schedule. I’m thinking about giving it one more try, but I will probably only stick to it if I can turn the extra waking hours into productive time.
So, last weekend I decided I would sleep like a “normal” person again. This was due to the inconvenience of needing naps when I was around other people and the problem of not being allowed to have caffeine or alcohol. That’s right, no caffeine or alcohol allowed for Everyman sleepers, as those interfere with the quality of sleep.
Then, I had that 5 page paper due on Monday morning. I was supposed to be working on it while I was on Everyman sleep lol. That was part of the point of getting less sleep. So anyway, Sunday night/Monday morning got me back on the schedule involuntarily. Then, I couldn’t fall asleep again last night due to excessive noise. Now I remember another reason I started the Everyman schedule. I can’t go to sleep early anyway while everyone else in my suite is awake. Then, I have 8:00 am classes every morning while everyone else gets to sleep in. Since I can’t get more than 6 hours of sleep normally anyway, I might as well cut it down to three quality hours.

Hm…I know a group of people that tried this, although I think they did one of the other ones – the one where you sleep every 4 hours. And they tried it over the summer. It didn’t work out for them. If this doesn’t work out for you and you go back to monophasic sleeping, I would recommend scheduling your sleep hours around your sleep cycles. The human sleep cycle is approximately 45 minutes, so if you have a night where you’re not going to get much sleep, if you wake up at the end of a complete cycle, you might feel better even if it isn’t a full 8 or 9 hours of sleep.
Actually I thought it was 90 minutes per cycle, which is why I used to set my alarm for 6 hours and 15 minutes after the time I went to bed if I had 8:00 classes. That gave me about 15 minutes to fall asleep if I didn’t have insomnia.
Anyway, this almost seems to be a cure for insomnia because you’re just that tired. I heard the one I’m doing takes longer to adapt to but you don’t feel as bad when you’re trying to adapt.
